Panleukopenia and parvovirus are life threatening viral infections, especially in a densely populated
shelter environment. What can shelters do to deal with them?

Dr. Elizabeth Berliner, Director of Clinical Programs for Maddie’s® Shelter Medicine Program at
Cornell University, spoke on “Canine Parvovirus and Feline Panleukopenia: Updates in Prevention,
Diagnosis, and Management in the Shelter Setting” at the 2012 ASPCA/Maddie’s Shelter Medicine
Conference.

In her presentation, she covered relevant updates on prevention of panleukopenia and parvovirus, a
description of diagnostic tests available and recommendations regarding management of such diseases in shelters.
