Rescue groups and shelters working to help homeless dogs who are large, mixed breed, senior, and of the pit bull type who suffer from neglect, abuse, or are otherwise in need may benefit from a new fund established by Dwight Lowell and his wife, Kimberly.

MFDogs_Sheltered_IMG_6202Philanthropist Dwight Lowell and his wife, Kimberly, have endowed the Lowell Fund,  a grant program intended to assist shelters and rescue groups help dogs who are large, of mixed breed, of the pit bull type, and large senior dogs who have been abused, neglected or otherwise are in need. 

The program will be operated by the Humane Society of the United States. From the media release announcing the new Fund:

The program strives to ensure that a) dogs have high-quality, compassionate medical treatment,  b) dogs are sheltered, protected, and cared for and adopted into loving homes; and c) promote an appreciation of dogs in general, and pit-bull type dogs in particular. The funding will benefit those who would otherwise not receive financial support from other HSUS programs but for this special opportunity.

Examples of activities eligible for funding include:

  • Transport for adoption.
  • Spay/neuter.
  • Care and placement for dogs found in hoarding or abuse/neglect situations, emergency response activities where large dogs constitute a significant majority of affected animals.
  • Training and public education intended to increase adoptions of large dogs from shelters.
  • Training and public education intended to reduce owner surrenders of large dogs.
  • Veterinary services that directly support any of the above.
