DaveWithDogAlmost 8,000 dogs and cats were adopted during Maddie's® Pet Adoption Days, well above the original estimate of 5,000 pets.

Preliminary reports show that during the the event, held June 1-2, 2013, the San Francisco Bay Area adopted roughly 3,800 pets; New York City around 2,500; Alachua County, FL, 675; Washoe County, NV, 470, and Dane County, WI, 260.

Maddie's Fund® founders Dave and Cheryl Duffield will give between $5 and $7 million to participating shelters and rescues for the adoptions. That funding will help them defer costs incurred in rehabilitating sick or injured animals and for overall operational expenses.

"Although this amount is significantly more than we anticipated, we couldn't be happier," said Dave.

A final monetary amount, adoption total and breakdown of adoptions by age and health status will be published in the weeks ahead as data is verified.
