Is there a simple, affordable solution for post-surgical pain in shelter dogs? A new drug may meet the bill.
At the recent University of Florida Maddie’s® Shelter Medicine Conference, held in conjunction with the No More Homeless Pets Conference in Jacksonville, FL, Dr. Katherine Polak, Senior Maddie’s® Shelter Medicine Resident at the University of Florida, reviewed a new drug for pain control in dogs.
Recuvyra is the first transdermal fentany solution to be licensed for the control of postoperative pain associated with major orthopedic and soft tissue surgery in dogs, and provides four days of pain control in a single dose.
In her presentation, Dr. Polak identified the features of what she called the ideal pain medication for shelter animals. They were:
- Non-invasive dosing
- One time administration
- Convenient
- Cheap
- Safe for the patient, staff and adopters
Recuvyra, said Dr. Polak, meets many of these criteria. Find out more to see if it’s right for your shelter by watching the video below, or on Maddie’s Fund website.
