For some rescue groups and veterinarians, working together is challenging. For Dr. Carrie Donahue and Underdog Pet Rescue of Wisconsin, it's a win for everyone involved. What's their secret?
At the 2015 Animal Care Expo in New Orleans, Dr. Donahue joined Underdog Executive Director Lauren Wojtasiak in a presentation on how they integrated operations in a single shared space in Madison, WI. Their partnership allowed Dr. Donahue to see patients in a storefront with a prime location at minimal cost, as well as being provided with surgical and dental equipment she couldn't have otherwise afforded.
In return, Underdog is able to budget their veterinary expenses precisely, knowing whether they can bring in senior and treatable pets without worrying that it will break the bank.
Additionally, Dr. Donahue gets new clients from the adopters, and exposure to her clinic when the rescue group holds adoption or other community events in their shared space.
The location in particular, said Wojtasiak, opened doors for them both. "We were able to afford a location in a vibrant neighborhood neither of us could have afforded alone. It brought in people who become adopters, volunteers and clients."
Additionally, the non-traditional, home-like setting was different from other adoption organizations and veterinary clinics, letting the shared business stand out from the crowd. It also helped the pets to feel less stressed, whether at an adoption meeting or veterinary appointment.
"People want to support businesses that help animals," said Wojtasiak. "This makes that easy."
