Few things spell more trouble for shelter dogs than fear and biting. In honor of the last week of Adopt a Shelter Pet Dog Month, here are the stories of Bubba and Casper, two dogs who found their happy endings thanks to medical and behavioral care — and above all, #ThanksToMaddie!

Bubba

You’d never want to say “boo” to Bubba no matter how close to Halloween it was… because the little guy was full of fears, so much so that a lot of people wouldn’t have seen him as an adoption candidate. Add to that a broken femur that caused him a lot of pain, didn’t heal well after surgery, and required an amputation, and Bubba was definitely a dog in need of some love.

Fortunately, the folks at Maddie’s Fund® knew Bubba could become a great family member. They took care of his medical needs and had the behavior team working with him in a loving foster home for four months.

What that didn’t accomplish, his new family did! He’s the much-loved dog of a mom and her two children, has adjusted beautifully, and is living the life of his dreams, #ThanksToMaddie!

Casper was always an amazing dog — one who overcame some daunting obstacles to find a home that appreciated just how amazing he really is!

An adorable two-year old Chihuahua mix, Casper’s happy ending might never have come to be without a lot of special people determined to help him.

His previous owner surrendered him to the San Francisco Animal Care and Control when he was less than a year old, and he was transferred to the San Francisco SPCA shortly after. The young pup was cuddly and sweet, but had a small biting issue. It was something the shelter staff deemed treatable, given a little bit of proper training.

Thankfully, his new family agreed, believing that the small effort they would have to put in for training would be minor compared to the joy Casper would bring to their lives. They fell in love with him at Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days® in 2014, and adopted him on the spot!

Just one year later, Sarah, his adopter, says he’s a completely different dog from when they adopted him. He took classes at Pawsitive Tails and worked with a behaviorist to help with the biting issue. He’s traveled across the country and welcomed house guests, and even plays with their new baby!

See you next Adopt a Shelter Dog Month!
