Georgia veterinarian Dr. Andy Mathis is the kind of person who restores your faith in humanity.

When an emaciated, terrified rescue dog with serious injuries was brought into his care, he at first thought she wouldn’t make it. One thing was certain: Unless she’d eat, she had no chance at all. But she was too stressed and frightened to eat anything.

So Mathis climbed into her kennel run and hand-fed her while he ate his breakfast right next to her. And amazingly, the shy, trembling dog began to take food from his hand.

What happened next was even more amazing. Dr. Mathis put the video of him feeding the dog he called Graycie onto his Facebook page, then went to take a much-needed nap. When he woke up, the video had been viewed hundreds of thousands (now millions) of times, and Graycie was famous.

And he was a hero.
