Perhaps your organization has already embraced virtual adoptions or are still deciding if you want to go that route. We’ve rounded up some resources to help guide you as you navigate the new world of Zoom adoptions.

First, the boring stuff. Get your ducks in a row with shelter and scheduling software, electronic document signing, online payment processing and web conferencing. ASPCA Pro has a nice round-up of services to consider (many are free or offer non-profit rates). You can’t have virtual adoptions without technology!

There are many ways adopters can “meet” their potential soulmate.

  • An adopter can do a one-on-one meet and greet with a pet in a foster home conducted via FaceTime, Google Hangouts or Zoom (to name a few)
  • Conduct the meet and greet with a staff member while the staff member is on-site. See how Austin Pets Alive! does it.
  • Hold a virtual adoption event and broadcast the event live. Potential adopters are able to see many dogs or cats at one time.  ASPCA Pro lays out how to host an event and be sure to check out this example from Concho Valley PAWS.

It’s important to provide adoption counseling after the meet and greet. Humane Rescue Alliance has their process available in PDF. And be sure to check out their entire virtual adoption resource library.

Once the adoption is finalized, pick-up can be arranged! Be sure to adhere to safe social distancing protocols.

And of course with any adoption, it’s vital to follow-up with the adopter afterwards to check-in and see how things are going. Good luck!
