Cleaning isn’t the may not be the most exciting topic, but it’s extremely important! You’ll learn loads from Dr. Chumkee Aziz in Cleaning and Disinfection in the Shelter, in this 2018 ASPCA-Maddie’s® Cornell Shelter Medicine Conference presentation.

In this informative talk, Dr. Aziz stresses that cleaning and disinfecting is a two-step process, with cleaning being the most important. A little bit of elbow grease can remove up to 98% of pathogens she shared. It’s also important to rinse whatever you have just cleaned because any detergent left behind can cause bleach and other disinfectants to become inactive. It’s also imperative she said, to rinse again about the disinfectant step, even if the product says it’s not necessary.

When discussing decontaminating ringworm, Dr. Aziz advises against using bleach. Why? The 1:10 bleach ratio she says, is too strong for animals to be exposed to.
