Shelter Animals Count (SAC), a source for collecting and sharing credible and accessible data, released its 2024 Mid-Year Analysis. The report compares animal shelter intake and outcome data from January through June to prior years. Also included in the report are additional insights from Adopt a Pet, including Supported Self-Rehoming Statistics.

Data highlights include:

  • 5% fewer community intakes: Community intakes are lower than this same time last year (Jan-Jun) by almost 5%, accounting for 155k fewer dogs and cats. Both dogs and cats are contributing to the decrease in intakes.
  • 5% fewer live outcomes: 2.7 million cats and dogs had a live outcome so far in 2024 (excluding including transfers), which is almost 5% (130k) fewer than the same months of 2023. Dog live outcomes are 6% (89k) fewer than 2023 and 9% (144k) fewer than 2019.
  • 4% fewer adoptions: 82k (almost 4%) fewer dogs and cats were adopted so far in 2024 compared to 2023. Dog adoptions are 5% (59k) lower than 2019, while cat adoptions are 17% higher (157k).
