Bigstock-Vector-Dog-Jack-Russell-Terrie-57891776It’s not possible to help animals by being rude, short, mistrustful or unkind to people. That’s the message of a recent ASPCA Pro webinar on customer service in animal shelters.

B.J. Rogers, CAWA, and Senior Director of ProLearning for the ASPCA, told the audience that good customer service isn’t difficult or complicated, but it does require some basic conditions to happen:

  • Genuine curiosity
  • Suspension of judgment
  • Benefit of the doubt (and a little forgiveness)
  • A shared sense of WHY
  • Starting with yes
  • Putting your tools to use
