Bigstock_Pit_Bull_166527Dealing with parvo, a deadly and highly contagious virus, is scary – especially in an animal shelter with its continual influx of vulnerable animals. Watch this clip from Maddie’s Fund® on saving treatable pets at the 2012 HSUS Animal Care Expo, where Dr. Barb Hanek, Chief Veterinarian for PAWS Chicago, talks about how they managed a crisis of 43 puppies with parvovirus – at the same time!

During her presentation, Dr. Hanek attributed their success to their implementation of crisis care herd management. Although herd care focuses on the medical care of a population of animals rather than individuals, Dr. Hanek combined her knowledge and experience in individual critical care with shelter population herd management. This resulted in a successful strategy including a team approach to daily weighing and titer testing.
